Having had some down time plus some fun time with Pete and Pam at Emu Park, somewhere we had never been before, we set off northwards once again.  However, not for long.  David took it upon himself to turn left and head inland - to see what's there.  Well, we commented on the mile upon mile of tar roads with not a car in sight, having just turned off the Bruce Highway which was VERY busy.  We stopped at a rest spot at Lotus Creek where some locals told us about free camping at Lake Elphinstone.  That's one of the best tips we have had this trip.  Lotus Creek was a lonely fuel stop with a camping park behind it which did not appeal much so we drove on (and on) for many miles, turning this way and that according to our kind benefactor's instructions and suddenly there it was.  A huge lake with lots of room to choose a spot from which we could contemplate the view.  Stunning.
The next night we visited our old friend Reid River free campsite to find it somewhat changed. We have often camped under the tree on the right but now the council have put barriers around more sensitive camp spots.  Still a great spot for an overnight stay.
Cardwell was a pleasant surprise.  Very much altered since the appalling damage done by the last cyclone and it is back to its amazing beauty.  So much so we have vowed to spend a few days there when we come back down in September.  It has to be one of the most lovely places in Australia.
The pie shop at Cardwell.  An important feature of the town.  When we came up last it was the only business open in the town due to the dreadful damage most businesses suffered.

Our caravan spot in the Flying Fish Point caravan park, Innisfail.  At last a few days to relax at an old but loved destination.  Cairns next stop.
