Jeff and Lori live in Nevada City, Ca.  However, their nearest town is Grass Valley and we spent some time exploring each place, both full of character with very interesting shops, cafes and bars.  All the old world character remains in place and apparently Nevada City is used quite frequently for background shots of movies.  Christmas is upon us (according to the shops anyway) and left is an example of a huge range of beautiful Christmas houses and decorations amongst all the Halloween pumpkins etc!
After a couple of days at "home" our next adventure began and we set off across the mountains to Reno.  The area is stunningly beautiful around Jeff and Lori's home, and continues through forests and across the mountain range past Lake Tahoe where we stopped for a picnic lunch.  Jeff pointed out his favourite ski-ing spot along the way.
California's weather is pretty stable, especially at this time of the year.  In San Diego it is just hot and sunny continually with the occasional day when it is merely warm.  L.A. seemed whilst we were there to be permanently far too hot!  At Universal Studios they had fixed up huge fans which sent a fine spray of cold water over the crowds to help in our survival......  All the way up the coast it was warm and sunny and we saw the famous golden hills (actually dry grass) for miles along the way.  Rain is indeed a previous commodity.
Yosemite was warm in the day and chilly at night and then back at the coast, warm to hot again.  Not a sign of a cloud.  Las Vegas was just downright hot and inside downright cold.  I can't even begin to think how much electrical power is needed just for air-conditioning the hotels.  Back in Nevada City it is still beautifully warm but the trees are turning into their Fall colours and it is just a little chilly in the evenings.  I certainly hope that winter brings some rain but snow will come to some areas which will boost the water supplies somewhat.
