Our train trip from LA to San Diego was a story in itself.  Firstly though, the bus from Santa Monica to Union Station.  Straight down one road (santa Monica Blvd) one hour and ten minutes then one turn and there was Union Station.  Caught the train because of the obliging train station staff who drove us down the long passage to the ticket office and then all the way back and up right on to the platform next to the relevant carriage!  How's that for good old American service?  However, that was NOT that!  About ten minutes out and we smelt smoke and the passengers from the carriages in front of us burst out into our carriage breathing heavily and coughing. The electrics had caught fire.  Came the fire engine and the police and we sat about for an hour or so and then the train hobbled down towards San Diego until we reached Solanda Beach (our stop) and then it terminated!  Such drama!
First stop we stayed with cousins Ian and Julia Trim (their house above) and Ian drove us all around the city and beach area.  Such a beautiful place, although I did say to him that perhaps after LA, most places would be beautiful! (he agreed!)
Wouldn't mind a couple of nights here!  The hotel is right on the seafront.
This bridge is hair-raising to drive over but such views.
Ian and David spent almost a complete day down at the Navy Depot exploring the now retired USS Battleship Midway.
I believe we had seen it in Sydney some years ago.  They were able to examine it in detail whilst Julia and I spent some quality time shopping.
Lot of seals inhabit part of the shore-line of the very up-market San Diego suburb of La Jolla.  Very smelly I'm afraid but fun to watch.
