Living Desert Sculptures
Our free camp at Mannahill.
We enjoyed our visit to Broken Hill. The art galleries are plentiful but we only graced one with our presence, purely to  see The Big Picture.  No photos allowed unfortunately but what a magnificent piece. The rest of the amazing gallery was worth the visit too.
A pleasant shady site at Broken hill.  Just as well as the second day was in the high thirties!
We have agreed that NSW has the prettiest inland countryside of all the states but now realise it also has enormous amounts of absolutely nothing! Broken Hill is a good size town but all around it is as above.
Incidentally, further to the comment above about pretty countryside, we have also concluded that in our opinion South Australia has by far and away the prettiest villages inland.
We spent one clear day at Broken Hill, having spent our arrival day investigating the town itself - we arrived very early having only travelled 150 kms. So the next day we drove out to Silverton, a very old mining town which was established before Broken Hill came along and pinched their glory (and a good many of their buildings!)  They were transported across to Broken Hill, as their finding was much bigger than Silverton's, so all that is left consists of the stone or brick buildings, mostly churches. Must not forget the famous Silverton Hotel which is featured in such movies as Mad Max!
Whilst we were at Silverton their major event for the day was a bike race.  As we were driving around we were officially stopped as the riders raced out of the scrub and across the road (in fact we were also stopped because a herd of brumbies charged across as well!)

After popping home for lunch, we set off again for Menindee Lakes which are very impressive - huge in fact.  Their caravan park was lovely too but not many takers.  100 kms from just about everywhere.  In the town David spotted the snowman on the far left.
The Menindee lakes run next to the Darling River but only take water from the river when it is in flood.
Two pubs/hotels in Broken Hill, one is for budget accommodation and the other luxury!  Wow! You have to guess which is which.....
These sculptures are the result of a get together of a number of sculptors from around the world.
