This tree is in a rest spot between Derby and Broome. The hole in the middle is big enough for a few people to stand in
The Pier at Derby.
The Derby Cup (Derby Derby) was held on the day we arrived so we decided to join the fun.  Placed $10 dollars on a horse to run a place and won $17. Then put $5 on a quinella (2 horses to run 1st and 2nd). Damn and blast - they ran 1st and 3rd....quit betting while still $2 up, safely in my pocket. Competitions for best dressed caused a great deal of amusement.  The Races is certainly the event to attend to take a look at the locals.  Derby is a tiny town but the amount of young people attending this event was amazing.
Part of the day's fun was the "best dressed competition, best lady, best man, best child etc.
And then there were horse races
We took a day trip up the Gibb River road from Derby to visit Winjana gorge and Tunnel Creek gorge
Winjana fresh water crocs of which there were dozens.  They are certainly different from the larger saltwater crocs who are very scary and you wouldn't dream of going within 50 mtrs of them.  This lot just hang around and totally ignore everyone.

Finally, I was able to buy 2 Mud Crabs from the local Butcher ($20 each!). I had to dash up to the local Woolies to buy a mini food processor ($12) to puree the chilli, onion and tomato. We sat down to dinner complete with table-cloth and wine. I have to admit that the expectation exceeded the experience.
The Derby c/park was just huge, well over 300 sites.  We lucked out on a larger than most site with good neighbours and a view over the mud flats.
